What Are ATS Resume Templates & Why Is ATS Compatibility Important?
In today's job market, it's more important than ever for job seekers to make sure their resume is compatible with applicant tracking systems (ATS). ATS is software used by employers to scan resumes and track applicants throughout the hiring process. However, ATS can sometimes have difficulty reading certain resumes, which can cause your application to be rejected outright (rarely) or be entered into the applicant tracking system incorrectly (a common problem).
To increase your chances of getting through ATS and in front of the hiring manager, read the job description carefully, use an ATS resume template, and be certain to include resume keywords from the job description.

Why Everything You Thought You Knew About ATS Resume Templates Might Be Wrong
There are so many myths and misunderstandings about ATS resume templates. Most importantly, virtually all modern applicant tracking systems can handle graphics with ease. The ATS will simply “skip” the graphic and move on to the text. Of course, this means that the words you insert in the graphic in the upper left of the Windowpanes template won’t “count” as resume keywords in the ATS. If you think those words are important as resume keywords, the solution is to make sure you repeat the words in the body of the resume.
The structure of your resume is especially important and in most cases, the reverse chronological format will be your safest bet to make sure the ATS reads your work experience properly.
One word of warning: beware of the cheap and free resume templates you find on the internet or even as free resume templates in Word. Many of these free resume templates (even some billed as free ATS resume templates) are constructed using a layout that is too complex for ATS to handle and the content of your resume will become jumbled and unreadable in the ATS. But, it is important for you to know that "complex" and "visually attractive" are not the same thing.
